The Orient and Peninsular Companies are expected to aceept the final offers of the Post Office regarding the Australian mail service, but thoy are delaying their replies thereto pending the ratification of the Indian mail contract by the Impe-iial Parliament. The Royal Commission appointed to inquire into the method in vogue of making and testing defensivo weapons, have furnished a report. They declare that the system is radically faulty, but the charges of corruption against • officials are unfounded. Wholesale defects in the construction of the weapons are pro\cdto exist ; also, there has been incessant blundering and gross waste of public money. Weapons which had been adopted by the Government were found to be practically useless. The Commissioners recommended the appointment of an eminent technical supervisor to act in conjunction with the Board of Advice. The Pope publishes a letter in which he refers to the strained relations between the Vatican and Italy. His Holiness expresses and earnest desire for reconciliation, and maintains that hia personal liberty would not injure Italy, while it would greatly contribute to the prosperity of the Papacy. The report of the Select Committee appointed to inquire into the charges of corruption against the Corporation of London, show that nearly twenty thousand pounds wero expended in efforts to mislead Parliament and the State as to public feeling respecting the City of London Local Government Bill.
