THE HAMILTON PUBLIC BUILDINGS.
The following correspondence, which explains itself, has been handed to us by th-) Acting-Mayor, Mr Geo. Edgecumbc :—
Public Works Department, Engincer-in-Chief's Office, Wellington, N.Z., May 18th 1887. W. A. (i UAH am, Esq., Mayor of Hamilton,
Sir, —By direction of lion, the Minister fur Public Works, I send herewith a, ti-ac-iiicr showing: the silo proposed by the District Engineer, Auckland, for the public buildings, Hamilton, viz., near the corner of lot 51), at the junction of Victoria-street and Richmond-street. The tracing also shows the situation of the site first proposed, which has been objected to on account of its not being convenient of access, and that it would be difficult to make a practicable graded approach to it, even at considerable cost. These objections would point to the site recommended by the District Engineer as being preferable, both as to cost of formation and convenience of access. If you concur in this view please wire your approval, and the contract will be proceeded with as quickly as possible.—l have the honour to be, Sir, your obedient servant, John Blackett.
To John Blaokett, Esq., Engineer-in-Chief, Wellington. Council are decidedly in favour of the site on the hill as first proposed, rather than the site suggested corner of lot 59. Geo. Edgecumbe, Mayor of Hamilton.
