RAGLAN NEWS.
The Board of Education having extended tho boundaries of the Raglan school dis- ; trict at the request of the householders meeting held ont he 25th of last month, a meeting of the householders of the extended' district took place in the schoolroom, Raglan, on Saturday at 7 p.m. hli Mitchell was called to tho chair, lhe accounts having been read over and passed the election of a committee next took place, resulting in the election of: tho fn - lowing' gentlemen : —Messrs T. Mitchell, J. N. Pegler, E. C. Savage, C. Sutton, J5. Frizzell, D. Grnt and C.: Charlton. At the conclusion of tho meeting tho committee met and appointed Mr T. Mitchell chairman and Mr J. N. Pegler secretary for the ensuing yaar. During the last fortnight—ever since tho strong easterly gales proved so destructive on parts of the East Coast— very unsettled weather has prevailed here, the wind generally blowing from the South and East, and at times being very cold indeed. On .Friday evening a southarly gale blew' with great force for some hours in some parts of the district, whilst in other parts a severe frost was felt. In the absence for so long of sea breo7.es colds seemed to have been more prevalent than ever known here, very few families escaping them. Easterly winds are as .much to be dreaded as • tlioose blowing in England during March and other nront'hs. Mr Horsev, our esteemed school-teacher;, is now restored to health once more, having suffered from acute bronchitis within the period mentioned. It is said on good authority that we are shortly to have a visit from a gentleman from Auckland, well-known in Waikato for his advocacy of railway reform, and who it is said is a candidate for a seat in the House. What success, he may meet with in this district I cannot tell. A good deal of interest is being taken in coming events. It seems a great pity that, political parties are not more defined; electors hardly know what principles the candidates' intend to support if returned. As " Harapipi " in your colums says, they all call themselves "Liberals." But we are not all " Hall marked like " Harapipi," or perhaps we should be able to distiuguisn the true from the false. Another great evil of our political platform seoms to be, we never until a few days before the election know who is really coming out, so no doubt we are often at a loss to know enough about the several candidates, their principles, profession and practices In fact our elections are a sort of .Tack in the. box display. However it may be in the coming contest, may a true Liberal be returned.—(Own correspondent, Raglan, May 31st, 1887.
