Mr Guinness, M.H.R., has been addressing his constituents in outlying district's duriDg the last week, receiving at each a vote of thanks and confidence. He declared himself a Government supporter for the reason that.it was the first Government that had really endeavoured to promote to the interests of the goldfields. The glut in the labour market at Brunnerton and neighbouring railway works, which was so prevalent recently, has disappeared, and all unable to find, work have gradually drifted elsewhere. There are very few unemployed now, as tbe contractors have lately been putting; on all the men they can get, as they are being kept up to time very strictly, the company being anxious to get on as fast as possible. Mr Seddon, M.H.R., has addressed two meetings of his constituents, at Dillmanstcwn and Kumarake. He said he was a "fair trader," and would oppose representation by population alone. N«lson and the West Coast required special representation. He strongly favoured the resumption of land if required by the people, the same as if it were wanted tor public works, lie received a vote of thanks and confidence at each meeting. The Jubilee Clebration Committee have' sent out two hundred and fifty circularsto local bodies, friendly and other societies, soliciting subscriptions towards amemorial home. Considerable enthusiasm! is displayed by some members, but three who disapproved of the establishment of the home proposed have resigned. Notwithstanding this it is expected that* large sum will be raised. DUNEDIN, Wednesday. E. H. Hay, a well-known solicitor, committed suicide this afternoon by cutting his throat. GISBORNE, Wednesday. Mr S. Locke, M.H.R. for the East Coast, announces, that, owing to illhealth, he will not contest the seat at the forthcoming election.
