NEWCASTLE ROAD BOARD.
Thk ordinary monthly meeting of the Newcastle Road Board was held at the chairI man's residence, on Thursday, the 14th inst. i Present: Messrs Corboy, (chairman), By- ■ croft, Corbett and Shepherd. The clerk read correspondence sent, also the following letter received from Mr E. Wilson Hamilton, 14th'April, 1887. To the chairman and members Newcastle Road Board. Gentlemen,--! beg respectfully to lay before you a few facts concerning the difference between myself and Mr Shepherd in re my contract. I attribute Mr Shepherd's action to the fact that I charged him Gs per day for harvesting instead of 5s which he was going to pay me, and also that I would not sink his well for £2 10s instead of £5, which I wanted for 50 feet. Gentlemen, I think you will agree with me that it is not fair for a person in Mr Shepherd's position to take contractors from their work to work for him, because if he does not happen to agree with all Mr Shepherd's wishes, why the result may be disastrous, as in my case. Mr Shepherd made an uncalled-for statement that I was always drunk, and did not appear to know what I was doing. All I can say is the statement is grossly untrue, and I would ask Mr Shepherd if I was not at my work during the Christmas holidays when everybody else were enjoying themselves, and he was the man who expressed himself surprisnd at my being at work. Can he do ay that ? Can he deny my rous- . ing him out of his bed at 7 o'clock in the morning to work for him 1 Can he deny i that ? There are many other things I could speak about, but I don't wish to occupy your time. Does it not look, gentlemen, as if Mr Shepherd always applies for these small grants when he has any need for labour on his farm. Of course, the labourer don't wish to refuse Mr Shepherd's terms on account of his having the power to pass his work. You will allow, gentlemen, that Gs a day is little enough for a man harvesting and keep himself. In conclusion, I have to inform you that I have completed the works required for tho completion of my contract as directed by Mr Corboy, and trust that the matter will now be amicably concluded.—Yours very truly, E. Wilson. Seven tenders were received for works on Mr Knorpp's property, and the tender of C. S. McCallum, for lid per chain for clearing, burning, and cutting outfall drains ; forming road, 2s Gd per chain, and to erect two culverts, £4 Bs, or a lump sum for the whole of £10 Bs, being the lowest, was accepted. A. Kennedy was allowed lGs 8d for use of road. _ «. The two members to retire having been decided by lot, resulted in Messrs E. C. Shepherd and A. Corbett having to retire. It was resolved that the annual meeting of ratepayers be held at the office of the board on Monday, the 2nd of May next, at 2 o'clock p.m., and the annual meeting of the board at noon of the same day. The arrangement made by the chairman and Mr Corbett with J. Magner for £4 10s was confirmed by the board, an account of Grix and Watson for £4 10s was paid, and the chairman was authorised to pay E. Wilson amount due, less costs of court when the work is completed.
