At the Supreme Court to-day Mr Justice Richmond expressed a wish that Parliament would relieve Judges from very improper work in connection with assessment cases. This afternoon Constable Walker arrested a woman named Elizabeth Treenery, wife of a dealer residing in Courtenay Place, on a charge of receiving a quantity of plate and wearing apparel, which it is alleged was stolen by the convict Crabtree daring the time he was at large from the house of Mr John Knowles, Sydney-street. The New Zealand war medal has been issued to the following privates :—Richard Julian, Taranaki Militia; Private Arthur Harrison, Taranaki Rifles and Taranaki Bushrangers; Private Joseph Street, Taranaki Militia ; Private Edward Chatter Bourke, No. 1 Company Taranaki Military Settlers; Farrier William Hazzelhurst, No. 1 Troop Colonial Defence Force, and Auckland Militia. At the Supreme Court to-day, the jury on Waters' case returnsd a verdict of not guilty, and the prisoner was discharged. CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. _ At the meeting of the West Coast Railway Guarantors to day to consider the application of the Railway League for assistance, the chairman, ori behalf of the committee, agreed to recommend the guarantors here and in Nelson to make grants fri the League if they had the means to do so.
