DEATH OF ANOTHER M.H.R.

POISONED BY TIN MEAT.

I BY TKLEGKAPH—OWN OOURBSFONnKNT,") Russell, Thursday. I regret to have record tlie sudden and unexpested death- of Mr Ihaka Tβ Tai, M. H. R. for the Northern Maori District. Ihaka and other natives were attending the synod in Auckland, and dined with Archdeacon Clarke on Sunday, a joint of roast boef and ii dish of tinned beef being amongst the ((odd things provided. Several natives, including , Ihaka, partook of the latter, and became very ill. They consulted a doctor in Auckland, who advised them to remain, but Ihaka and two others belonging to this district returned yesterday per the Clansman, being anxious to be with their friends. Ihaka since his arrival gradually got worse, and expired a few minutes after twelve to-day. Dr. Walling had been sent for, but hus not yet arrived. Great regret is felt throughout the district, both by Europeans and natives, as Ihaka was recognised as a Stirling man, and was influential with his people. It will be difficult to find his equal to represent the district in the Genefal Assembly. Most likely his eldest son, Mita Te Tai, will succeed him as chief of his tribe. NGARUAWAHIA RACES. ■_ : «.
