Rev. P. Keiper, pastor of the German Lutheran Church at Rockford, 111., has been compelled to resign because he drank beer. One of the curious features of the case was that all the saloon-keepers in the place were against him. But their attitude in the matter becomes intelligible when it is stated that the reverend gentleman did not pay for his beer. He asserted in his defence that he never drank more than four or five glasses at a time and was able to put his accusers under ths table in a convival contest. This power Mr Keiper considers much in his favour, but nevertheless he had to resign. The most recent fad In London and American Society seems to be the retention by ladies of their maiden names after marriage, in conjunction with the names thrust upon them by that ceremony.
