LATEST WELLINGTON NEWS.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Monday. Br the mail the Colonial Secretary has received letters patent under the Great Seal, granting the Kermadec Islands to New Zealand. A proclamation formally annexing them will be issued by the Governor as soon as Parliament passes the necessary Act. The criminal sessions of the Supreme Court opened to-day. The Grand Jury found true bills in most of the cases, including that of embezzlement preferred against W. R. Waters, late secretary of the Northern Land Loan Building Company. Thomas Lawson, for larceny, was found guilty, and sentence was deferred. Arthur Gordon, for assault and rubbery, was acquitted. Bush fires at Carterton yesterday threatened to destroy f ,he business part of the town. Several shops and stores were at times alight, and it was only by continued vigilance that heavy losses were averted. All danger is now over.
