WAIKATO COUNTY COUNCIL
The ordinary monthly meeting ot the council was held in the Council Chambers, Hamilton, yesterday. Present: Messrs A. Primrose (chairman), Runcitnan, Seddon and Johnson. Cambridge and the County.—The Clerk reported that he had forwarded to the Cambridge Borough" Council the amount owing to the council, being £51 13s 7d. There was nothing standing to the credit of the Cambridge riding to set off against the amount owing. He had received a letter from the town clerk at Cambridge, asking what right the county council had to claim £34 from the Cambridge Town District Hiding for painting and repairing the Waikato bridge, at Cambridge.—After some discussion it was agreed that, as the Cambridge Borough Council had repay its proper contributions, the clerk forward to the Government a statement of the whole case, and request that a commission be appointed to enquire into the matter with a view to settle the difference.
The Churchill Punt.—Cr. Johnson reported that Mr Gibb had consented to take charge of the punt for the present. He understood that Mr Brookes was to have met the settlers, and that a note of the arrangement t'come to would have been forwarded to the council.—The Clerk said he had received no communication from Mr Brookes, and the council then resolved that Cr. Johnson be authorised to lock up the punt, retaining the key until some arrangement had been come to between the settlers.
Waerenga Road.—A petition was received from a number of residents of Waerenga, asking the council to carry out the drainage of the road between the creek and the school. The road, they pointed out, was flooded in winter, and at times was completely impassable. The length of drain required would be about IS chains, a third of which would pass through Mr Samson's land. Mr Samson offered no objection to the work.—Cr. Johnson did not think the cost would exceed £s.—ln reply to the chairman, the clerk said the Rangiriri riding had only £39 to credit, and the outstanding liabilities amounted to £50. — Under the circumstances, it was decided that the work could not be undertaken.
The Meremere Bridge.—Cr. Johnson said this work reflected no credit either upon the contractor or the engineer. It was constructed of swamp timber, and would not last.—lt was agreed to pay the contractor, Cr. Johnson entering a> protest. The Macandrew Memorial. —The Macundrew Memorial Committee forwarded copy of subscription list.—The council decided that as a body they could not subscribe, though they might do so individually. Accounts.—A number of accounts were passed for payment, and the council adjourned.
