LAND COURT, ALEXANDRA

| Thursday.!

At the Native Land Court here to-day, the* Manuaihi Block, Aotea, was before the Court, Major Mair and Mr Parahui Te Ngata presiding. For the claimants, Pouwhare and others, Mita Karaka conducted the case. There were no less than eleven counterclaims put in, the hearing of which took the whole day. There were a large number of natives present, but the best of order was observed.

The first counter claim was that of the Awaitai. 2. Major Te Wheoro for Waikatos. 3. Abata Waaka and others. 4. Pumipi Hapiinana and others. 5. Rewiti Patara and others. G. Poutu Mowhaere and others. 7. Aihipene Kaihou, for Ngatihata Aihipene, caused some amuse-, ment by asserting other claims , were gammon. Ngatihata had taken land there by conquest alone. Subsequently he admitted that Ngahimahuta (Tawhiao's hapu) was in it. Bth. counter claim Hemi. Matini Te Awaitai claimed from ancestry, right of conquest. 9th. counterclaim. Tehi Rahi by right of conquest, and occupation. Chaimant declined to go fully into his claim on the present occasion. 10th. Counterclaimant Te Heruika for Ngatihaua by right of conquest. 11th. Hoterenei, Te Rangi-o-Kaia, claimed by right of conquest, and occupation for 16 Hapus of Waikatos. The Court advised that some counterclaimants amalgamate their claims, being apparently identical, and so save time and expense. The Court then adjourned until 10 a.m. to-morrow.

The Land Court sat to-day. Many claimants amalgamated with Waikato re claims on Aotea block. Tewhero conducted and others did the same with Amaitaia and his people. Mita Karaka will take charge of the Ngatihaua claims. Being engaged at Cambridge court he applied for an adjournment until Monday next. Granted. The court will sit to-morrow on succession claims. _^^___^______
