TRADE WITH SYDNEY.

(Hawera Star.) As a free trade Ministry with a large majority at its back meets the New South Wales Parliament to-morrow, we may expect to hear shortly of the remission of the duties recently imposed on agricultural and dairy produce. That alone might serve to give a fillip to the trade which is growing between New South Wales and New Zealand, but, apart from that, it seems that the recent dreadful weather in the other colony has caused a deficiency in the grain crop, which is most likely to be made up by the importation of some of the surplus yield with which New Zealand has been blessed. It is estimated that that surplus will reach 1,250,000 bushels of wheat and 8,000,000 bushels of oats. On the other hand, New South Wales will need for food purposes, the Sydney Evening News estimates, at least, 3!O00,6OO bushels

mure than it hrs grown : and, as for oats, it is always a large importer of New Zealand grown, and will require more than ever this year owing to the loss of much of tho maize crop. We may hope tha,± the increase of trade in this direction will be supplemented by an increase also in that of dairy produce. If the duties now levied on butter, cheese, bacon, etc. are swept, away, the New Zealand produce which can be' sent there will necessarily nett so much more to the producer. It also has to be remembered that, in the opinion of competent judges, New South Wales will always be able to take a certain quantity of meat during winter time. There seems, therefore, to be good prospect of an increase of trade with the sister colony, of which we in this part of the colony may hope to benefit from in some measure.
