OHINEMURI NEWS.

[FHOM OUR OWN COKHESrONIIENT.!

Pakkoa, Thursday. The licensing election which took place on Monday last, was almost like a return to the times when elections were elections. When the poll was declared, quite a lively scene was enacted. Several of the candidates, whose forte is rather comedy than melodrama, assumed a mien and voice which Henry Irviug might have profitably witnessed. Had it not been for the presence of our Deputy Minister of Justice, the loss of some of the azure blood of our old nobility would have cast quite a gloom over our peaceful community. NoJ-vless than threo of our mines aro to be floated on the European market. Two of these are situated at Waihi, and one at Karangahake. Mr McCandlish, an English gentleman, staying at Tauranga, who is well acquainted with the practical working of mines, has made a careful inspection of several likely areas of auriferous country at the latter place, and has had a number of careful assays taken which have given splendid results. Once English capital comcs to be invested in Karangahake, the whole district will be made. There are reefs large and numerous, abounding all over " the hill " which, properly opened up, will be eventually permanent dividendpayers. Tho Ohinemuri School Committee have been compelled to apply for a fourth teacher for the Paeroa school, owing to the increased average. The Karangahake •people are now agitating for a school to themselves, and this will, without doubt, be eventually obtained. The Provincial Auditor has disallowed a sum of money invested by the late committee in a testimonial for a lady teacher who was married some time aso. A fair numbor of entries have been received for the S. Patrick's Day Meeting of the Ohinemuri Jockey Club, and a good day's sport is expected. A beneficial rain has passed over the district, and feed appears to be much more plentiful. ■
