The weather wao fine, and the attendance large, among those present being Sir Henry Loch, Governor of Victoria, and Lord Carington, Governor of New South Wales.

After one break away a good start was effected, the horses getting off in the following order—Lochiel, All Gold, Phaon, Abuse, Arsenal, Satyr, Nelson and Trident. Desperado, however, went to the front, and turning into the straight the first time passed Lochiel, and by the time the grandstand wa« reached showed no less than a dozen lengths in front. After him came Phaon, All Gold, Arsenal, Satyr, and Trident. Nelson had fallen back, and Grace Darling was lost. No material change occurred in the positions until the bridge over the salt water river was passed, where Nelson, Trident, Arsenal, and All Gold improved their chances, while Lochiel dropped back beaten. Passing the abattoirs, at the back of the course, Abuse had displaced Desperado, and assumed the lead, Nelson, Trident, Arsenal, and All Gold in a bunch together, with Phaon and Satyr close behind. The pace became now very fast, and rounding the turn for home Trident, Nelson, Arsenal, All Gold, Aouse, and Impulse svere racing together in the first division. The last-named was the first to appear in the straight, then canie Phaon, who had made a momentary effort, Trident, Arsenal, Nelson, and All Gold. Impulse soon died away, and Trident with a great rush forged ahead, while Nelson and All Gold disposed of the others, and the race evidently lay between these three. A magnificent struggle ensued between Trident and the New Zealand champion from the end of the carriage paddock to the judge's box, but the three-year-old managed to hold his own, and succeeded in getting home first by a shost head. All Gold was a good third, Ocean fourth. Abuse fifth, Arsenal sixth, and the others come in straggling Lochiel was hopelessly beaten.
