The Chinese alphabet contains about thirty thousand characters, and the man who thinks of constructing a Chinese typewriter will have to make it the size ,of, a fifty horse-power threshing-machine and run it by steam. The ex-Empress Eugenie is living in a villa at Posilippo, outside Naples, in close retirement. She is feeble and much aged. At Rome, Eugenie went to the Royal Palace to see the sword carried by Napoleon Bonaparte at Marengo. Hitherto the French Government has defrayed the cost of the decorations bestowed on its own citizens, hut henceforth they will be paid for by the recipients, the fee ranging from 12s (id to £13, according to the 1 pature ot the bestowed.
