PROPOSED DUEL BETWEEN WOMEN.

Miss Booth, or, as she is called in Paris, "La Marechale," has had an nmusing 'though somewhat troublosome experience of the cares that wait upon self-assumed dignity. The Salvation Army, both in its" action and details, represents the Church militant, but its commander has not till now been called upon to incur the perils attendant on tho assumption of military rank. Madame Ast'.e de Valsayre, an eccentric French lady, with a mania for fighting duels, finds in Miss Booth an antagonist worthy of her steel. She challenged "La Marechale" to mortal combat. Receiving no answer to her first cartel, she sent another couched in such language that Miss Booth accepted the challenge, and having, by the laws of duelling, the choicc of weapons, announced that she would publicly answer her adversary. The Salvationist put a price of admission to the arena, and a large number of persons assembled expecting to see a spirited encounter. But Mits Booth had no

intention of fighting with lethal weapons, and improved the occasion by making an address in which she expressed hor desire to convert ferocious peoplo from the error of their ways. Madame de Valsayre was very jndiciously deniod admittance to the hall, and was obliged to retire, uttering loud protests of indignation. There is both a serious and comic side to this farce, and it brings forcibly into prominence the characters aud incidents of this grotesque age.
