NATIVE LAND COURT, CAMBRIDGE.
—, —« Thursday was taken up in appointing successors to deceased owners. Yesterday, on the assembling of the Court, Mr Bell said it had been liis intention to apply that a portion of the Pukckura and Puahoe blocks be sold to defray the costs incurred in connection with the recent action at the Supreme Court, Auckland, by which the sixteen claimants had been declared to have an interest in the land as well as the ten grantees. Such an application, however, could only be acceded to by the Court when all the parties agreed upon the subject. After the adjournment on Thursday the question had been under discussion, and he now understood that thera was no prospect of an agreement being arrived at, and under the circumstances he was not in a position to make the application. It was a matter for regret, as such an arrangement would have been only fair and proper. He had nothing further to say, and would now withdraw.
Mr Hudson Williamson said, in anticipation of such an application being made, he had been instructed by the AttorneyGeneral to appear 011 his behalf, and to state that, if such an application as that indicated by Mr Bell had been made to the Court, he would, as one of the parties to the Supreme Court suit, give his consent to its being granted. Further than this, had an application been made to the Court to impose a further restriction on the alienability of the land, he was also prepared to approve of that cour.se being taken. Mr Williamson said this was the explanation of his presence there that day.
Air E. T. Dufaur, who appeared for a section of the natives, said they did not wish to repudiate their responsibility for the payment of tlie costs incurred in securing them in their rights, and were willing to pay for such services in money, but objected to the selling of the land which they had recovered with such difficulty.
The court then proceeded to deal with the question of sub-division.
