WAIKATO COUNTY COUNCIL.
Thk usual monthly meetingof the council was held at the chambers, Hamilton East, yesterday. Present: Mr A. Primrose (Chairman), Crs. Runcimnn, Johnson and Seddon, Thk Chukchiu. Punt.—Cr. Johnson said he lmd arranged to meet the Government Surveyor, re taking over the punt. He thought tho (Government should be asked to put np stockyards. —The Chairman said if the settlers wanted stockyards they would have to put thorn up themselves. There were no yards to the Hamilton p un t. —Cγ. Johnson, in reply to the chairman, said he had not had any conversation with the settlers interested in regard to the management of the punt. w,ammuih;e and thk County.—The Clerk read a number of letters which had ! passed between himself and the borough authorities of Cambridge, in reference to the moneys owing to the county by the borough. Tho Mayor of Cambridge wrote, as follows, on the 28th January :—" Referring to your's of tho 14th iust., re accounts said by you to be owing by the Cambridge Borough Council to the Waikato County Council, I would require more definite information as to what the particulars of your claim is. You refer to section ift of the Counties Act, 1886, as the basis of your claim against the Borough of Cambridge, but on reference to it I find it only refers to the adjustment of county council accounts,, and does not refer to borough councils. I know nothing . of any main road debentures or any annual liability of the borough council, so must ask you for an explanation of the matter. If any agreement has to be made for which the Borough Council are to be made liable, they surely have a right to bo consulted in the matter, and not arbitrarily informed that they have to pay £5 11s Sd, or any other sum per annum. In the matter of charges made by tho Auckland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board 1 am aware that ' they are being contested by the Waikato County Council and other local bodies, but on the 27th May, 1880, you made a demand on the chairman of: the Cambridge Town Board for the sum of £24 llis 4d, stating that as the amount of their contribution to the Auckland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, which sum they paid you in July, 1880, but have since been refused,, any participation in the, benefits of the Auckland Board on the grounds that the Waikato County Council have never paid to the Auckland Board any portion of the money obtained from the Cambridge Town Board, so that instead of paying any more money on account of the Auckland Hospital ■ and Charitable Aid Board to the Waikato Comity Council, I must ask the Waikato County Council to refund the £24 iGs 4.d already paid to them, and not having been paid to the Auckland Board, we have been debarred from the advantages we would have been entitled to on account of such payment. You say the claim is from 1883-1886, but as the Act only came into force in ISBS, I presume that is an error as to dates."—The Clerk said he had written to the Cambridge Borough Council fully describing the position. The contribution to hospitals, etc., was not for vthe period to which the Auckland Board referred, but for a previous due, and the money had been forwarded to Auckland. All this had been fully explained.—The Chairman said there were none so blind as those who would not see.—After some discussion, in the course of which considerable surprise was expressed at the density of Mr Gwynneth's perceptive faculties, the clerk was authorised to again refer the borough authorities of Cambridge to the former correspondence. In the event of no satisfactory result being attained, it was agreed that the matter should be referred to the Government.
County Wobks.— The Engineer reported that the Matahura road works were completed. The Meremere hill work was only partly done, and the contractor promised to complete it before next meeting. The River road would be completed in a few weeks, and would be a good iob. Two sets of pipes were required on the Whangamarino station road. (These were authorised.) The work at the Wairangi statioa had been let to Patterson. Muir had' finished the Wairangi road, but had not put on sufficient fascines.
Road neak Gall's.—Cγ. Johnson said there were 40 chains of road between Gall's and Paitai in a very bad state of repair. He thought about £10 would be sufficient. —The Chairman said it was entirely a question of monev. The riding account was overdrawn. Was Cr. Johnson preEared for a special rate ?—Cr. Johnson said e was pot. Ho had done his dut,y in bringing , tlie matter before the council. — The subject then dropped.
A number, of accounts were passed for payment, and the council rose.
