LATEST WELLINGTON NEWS.
[by tislegkaph.—press association.] Wellington, Monday. The prisoner Crabtree is still at large. At an official enquiry to-day it was shown by what means lie obtained his liberty, which was ingenious. He had by some means obtained a gouge, and first tried to remove the staple off the door, but, finding this impossible, he gouged out the hinges, and was thus enabled to force the door open from the back and succeeded in getting himself over. How he got over the gaol wall without being observed it is not known, but as the walls are not high there could be 110 great difficulty in doing so, especially as darkness prevailed. The enquiry sliows negligence on the part of the warder, whose duty it was to inspect the cells durthe night. It is believed that Crabtree is being sheltered in town. The Premier returned from Dunedin this afternoon. Nothing has transpired to throw any light upon the recent fires. Hassell expressed his opinion that the place was deliberately fired, and states circumstantial evidence reasons. At a meeting of the Licensed Victuallers Association this afternoon Mr John Plimmer was elected president. The Endeavour Inlet Antimony Company have received a telegram from their manager that they have struck into a new level. This gives them a fresh level for hopes with 175 ft. of backs, and about 1000 ft. greater length than the present workings. The racehorse Nelson was shipped for Melbourne by the Wairaraoa this evening. Two distinct shocks of earthquake were felt at 0.2 p.m. this evening. The first was rather strong, but the second was only slight. The direction, apparently, was oast to west.
