[BY TELEGRAM—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The Minister of Public Works will leave for Grey mouth next week to turn the first sod of the Midland Railway line. The house of Captain Home, at the Hutt, was burned down to day at twelve o'clock. The contents, valued at £1500, are destroyed. The building was insured for £350 in the National. THAMES, Tuesday. Inspector Goodall has received a telegram from Rotorua to the effect that a prisoner named Thomas Moore, who had been under the influence of drink, attempted suicide by stabbing himself with a pair of scissors on the left side. It is expected that the wound will not prove fatal. How the scissors came into his possession is not known, as he had been searched. CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. A burglar named Chas. Anderson was caught at 2 o'clock this morning in Kincaid's grocery shop, Cashcl-street, by Constable Coster, who noticed the window open, and found him rifling the till. He surrendered without resistance. DUNEDIN, Wednesday. Tnsman was scratched for the Dunedin Cup at 4 p.m. to-day. A young man named Egley was fined 5s to-day for disturbing a person on New Years Day by kicking at his door for a lark.
