Wellington, December 29th, 1880. Sir.—l have the honour, by direction </ the Hon. the Minister of Lands, to acknow ledge receipt of your letter of the 4th inst., submitting a schedule of further workwhich are required at the Te Aroha, Hoi Springs. ■ -In reply I am to state that th Government fully recognises the desirable ness of the proposed works, but unfortunately the vote for the development m thermal springs will not admit of am further expenditure at Te Aroha. In fact the vote on the estimatesof expenditure from Consolidated revenue will be considerably exceeded at the end of the financial year. With regard to the question of appointing a resident medical practitioner it is considered that visiting the hot springs should have no difficulty in obtaining the best available medical advice now that railway communication is open between Te Aroha and Auckland.—l have the honour &c., (signed) H. J. H. Eliott, Under Secretary.—o. Ahier Esq., Secretary Domain Board, Te Aroha. An .official intimation has been received by Mr George Robson, one of the signers of the town district petition, from the Colonial Secretary's office, Wellington, relative to the proclamation of Te Aroha as a town district, and stating that returning officer will shortly be appointed and an early day fixed foi the election of member.of the town board. Comparatively littl* interest has yet been excited by the election, and rumour is silent as to the pro bable candidates, but as soon as the dat. is fixed there will no doubt be a sufficient number of eligible persons in the Held. A slight shock of was ex perienced here yesterday a few minutes De fore one o'clock p.m., and also at Waiorongomai. It was only momentary and wascarcely perceptible to anyone out of doors, but persons inside their houses felt the bnildings tremble as if struck by a violent gust of wind. The air was perfectly stih at the time.
