RAGLAN ANNUAL SPORTS.

The annual njiorts were held on the lust day of the old year, instead of New Year's Day as on previous occasions, as many settlors desired to be present at thu Kawhia sports on New Year's day. A large number of settlers assembled to witness the sports and meet one another. The attendance was not quite so large as on previous occasions. Great interest was taken in the variof* races run, and a good sum of money was collected for the prizes. Tho weather was most brilliant, and, for Raglan, very hot. In the afternoon a light shower fell, which brought a refreshing sea breeze along with it. Seventeen or m< ire racen were run, the results of the principal events being , as follows: — Maiden Flat Rack, 100 yds.— Davie*, 1; Simon, 2. Six ran. Davien came in easily before the rest. 200YP8 Flat Rack Handicap.—Taukiri, 1; Davis, 2, One Mile Handicap.— J. La Trobe, 1; J. Gal van, 2. Four ran. A well contested race. Boys' Hack, undkr lSvns. (Handicap.) —H. Gilmoiir, scratch, 1, 7s 6d; W. Wnllw, 2. Five ran. 200 yds Handicap Hurdle Rack, over 8 nights of hurdles.-S, Bishop, 1, 20s; Waka, 15yds, 2, ss. Five ran. % Running Hoi , Stkp and Lkas , .—Bishop, 1; Taukiri, 2. Three competed. Boys' Rack, under 12yr«.— W. Wallis, 1, 5s ; A. Wallis, 2. Canoe Rack, over hurdles.— Rangi 1, 20s ; Hiri 2, ss. There was great excitement during this nice, two of the canoee wore broken at the b< •Wβ, and one upset. Old Man's Race, Hinukn l»t, GOs; Muri 2nd. Vaulting with a Pole.—Tankiri Is, 10s ; Simon and Whiti tie, la 6d each. Leaping great heights. Running High Jump.—Tankiri Ist. 8s; Simon and McQuin, tie, Iβ 3d eaih. Girl's Race.—Kana Ist, 4s ; Meri Rehu 2nd, 2s . Girl's Race.—Toto Ist, 7» 6d ; Kana 2nd, 2s 6d. This was a well contested race. The races finished at six. The usual Npw Year's Evo festivities were kept up. The boys' visiting tho homes of the various settlers of the town to nnsr in the New Year were a* usual liberally supplied wth New Year's cheers, ami may the New Year before us be one of prosperity not only to the Raglan district, but to thu colony at large.
