The Waikato Times AND THAMES VALLEY GAZETTE. Equal and exact justice to all men, Of whatsoever state or persuasion, religious or political. THURSDAY JAN. 6, 1887.

A. Pakkoa telegram in the Thames •Star states: "The much-dreaded Codlin Moth has been evolved by the recent hot weather. One local fruit-grower states that it appears in every other apple. It will undoubtedly create fearful havoc among our large market orchards here." We have also been informed that the pest has been seen in Hamilton, and doubtless it existe in other parts of Waikato, at least in those places where it was observed last year. So far the nuisance has not assumed very serious proportions, and we should strive to prevent its doing so. Some time ago the Waikato Horticultural Society, at a meeting held at Hamilton, appointed a committee to go into the matter and to report as to the best and most economical remedies to be applied in order that advantage might be taken of their labours this season. Nothing further has transpired, but it is to be hoped the committee will get to work -without any unnecessary delay. Mr Edward Lake, M. H. R., who takes a deep interest in all horticultural affairs, has written to Professor Kirk, at Welllingfcon, requesting that gentleman to prepare a series of diagrams of the insect in its different stages, and to furnish all the information available in regard to the remedies to be applied. It is expected that the professor will forward what is required before the date of the show at Te Awaniutu on the 17th March, so that it might be available on that day. The fruit industry promises t© occupy a prominent place in Waikato before long and it behoves orchardists to take active measures to conserve their interosts. .
