On his way home from the Syringa Music Hall after his final icbuff from Mrs Foxborouirh, Mr Cudemoro first awoko to the f.ict that he was dogged. A lather lo^s expert tracker thaa old Nibs had for a littlo taken that worthy's place, mid the money-lender's eyes had fallen mechanically upon a shabby <renteel young man as ho left the Hall. Comingdown Portland-street he rather suddenly >tuiok into one of the sido streets leading into Poitl.uul -place ; then, suddenly recollecting the want of borne small article of habord<tshery such as ho was accustomed to purchase at a shop in Oxfordstreet, ho turned about abruptly to retrace his bteps. At the corner he run almost into tho arms of the bhabby genteel young 'nan ho had noticed outride the Syrinjf.'i. In an instant all the money- lender'H suspicions were aroused, ho pur-mod tho even tenour of his way into Oxford street, but like a woman now ho had eyes in the back of hia head. Ho walked home quite leisurely, and knew perfectly well that shabby young man followed him like his shadow. To take a oab Mr Cudemoro knew would be useless. If be was, as he had no doubt beeu, under tho surveillance of the police, they knew perfectly where he lived, and any attempt to evade his unwelcome attendaut was ridiculous. Besides, go home he must, if it was only to get that thousand pounds which he had just procured for this very emergency. Peeping from behiud hia curtains, Mr Cudemore caught occasional glances at the shabby young man lounging pensively up and down the street. He was a young officer, new to hia business, and undoubtedly rather too pronounced in his manner of conducting it. • If they were only all such duffers as that,' muttered the money-lender, 'the idea of not being able to slip the police at any moment would be preposterous.'
