NEW PLYMOUTH, Thursday. Tub body ot a Maori woman has been found on the beach at Okara, horribly mutilated. She was blind, and left the pah three days ago to get flax. She was never seen alive afterwards. It is supposed that she fell over a precipice.
MASTERTON, Thursday. A you tli Darned John Mawlunray was brought to the hospital at midnight, suihning from concussion of the brain and fracture of both thighs and one leg below the knee. The accident occurred felling trees.
WELLINGTON, Thursday. A meeting of the Executive Council, presided over by the Governor, was held to-day. The Ministers present were the Hon. Mesbis Buckley, Tole and Larnach. No business of importance was transacted. The Minister of Mines goes South on v\ ednesday. By the Tongariro, which sailed for London this afternoon, four live sea lions, recently taken at Auckland Islands, were shipped by her. Major Burns, of the New Zealand Regiment of Artillery, is appointed major in the New Zealand Militia. The Order-in-Council made in October ' last re the close season for mullet has been revoked, and the following regulations aie gazetted, which shall have force and efiect as under -.—The months of December, January, and February in - each year are hereby prescribed a close season for the fish known as mullet or kana. (2) Any persou committing a breach of the above regulations shall be liable to a penalty of not less than one pound and not exceeding £50. (3) These regulations shall have eflect in all salt, fiesh, or brackish waters in that part of the Kaipara harbour inside the Gazette notice. Friday. Brennan, charged with rape, was acquitted.
NAPIER, Friday. The large sawmills at Ormondville, belonging to Lycett and Gross, were totally destroyed by fire at an early hour this morning.
MARTON, Thursday. A man named McSweeney was killed on the road between Bull's and Turakina yesterday by the capsizing of a dray.
CHRISTCttURCH Thursday. A close holiday was observed to-day on account of the anniversary of the province. The weather waa fine. 1000 persons patronised the excursions, 1000 the excursion to Lyttelton, aud 5000 the popular sports at Hag ley Park Two miles walk : J. M. Court (60 yards), 1. Five Mile Bicycle : F. R. Dunsford (scratch), 1. Over 3000 at the Caledonian Sports. The Five Mile Walking was won by Penfold (350 , yds): time 38min. 45secs. Mile Race : J. O'Connor (scratch), 1. Five Mile Bicycle : T, Goodfrey (300 yds), 1. Bean, (scratch), 2 ; time, 17miii. 37secs. Wrestling Championship : Won by H. Dunn, beating G. Robinson. Nearly 700 tickets are issued for the unemployed picnic. A man was found dead in the Domain this morning. A pawn ticket was found in his pocket, and made out to "T. Allen." An empty brandy bottle was by his side, and he had carpenters' tools with him.
