CAMBRIDGE BOROUGH COUNCIL, [BY TELEGRAPH.] Cambridge, Wednesday Night.

The Cambridge Borough Council met in the council chamber to-day. Present: The Mayor, Councillors Hally, Gillett, Hughes and Hewitt. Cr. Hally occupied the chair until the Mayor (Mr John Gwynneth) had made the usual declaration, after which he was inducted. Coiuumposdence.—Thoro were several letters and circulars from the Colonial Secretary, and various other persons that were received, also copies of the by-laws from the Town Clerk at Devonport, Hamilton and Thames, which were ordered to be acknowledged with thanks. Mr J. Lamb wrote on behalf of the Cambridge B.ind asking to have the Public Hall free of costs granted on condition that Messrs Luinb, Webber and Sharp bo responsible for any damage that may be done and provide lights ; from a Maori asking to have £1 11s poundage fees returned. Resolved that it be not refunded. —From Mr T. Nixon, saying he had purchased lot No. 94 and asking to be put on the roll. Resolved that as an extraordinary vacancy was about to occur it be referred to the returning officer who will attend to it in due course. —From Mr T. B. Lewis asking to have the Thornton Road repaired. Referred to the Public Works Committee that would shortly ba appointed. —From Mr W. G. Collins, asking if people were allowed to substitute cattle for any that were sold and registered upon the town run, also suggesting that as part of the year had elapsed, the fees might be reduced. After a very lengthy discussion, Cr. Hewitt proposed that anyone selling cattle to go out of the town may substitute others in their place on payment of Is each. —Cr. Hughes proposed a*, an amendment tha* every annual on the lun muse bo registered.—Seconded by Cr. Gillett and carried.—lt was resolved to lower the fee t > 5s from January Ist to June 30th. —Mr Houghton, late actingMayor, wrote, tendering his resignation. — It was resolved that it bo accepted, and the returning officer bo notified of the vacancy. —The chairman of the District High School wrote, asking not to be charged for the use of the Public Hall for the late concert. — It was resolved that the application bo not entertained. —The Yen. Archdeacon Willis wrote, drawing attention to several railway matters that wanted attention.—lt was resolved that the clerk inform Mr Willis that the matter will receive the attention of the council upon the first favourable opportunity. The Mayor informed the council that he had received a communication from the Colonial Sacretary saying that Cambridge had been omitted from the second schedule of the Municipal Corporations Act, but further stating that the Government would bring in a bill next session to validate any acts of the council in the interim. The poundkeeper's account showed a loss for the month of £2 8s 6J, A very long discussion ensued as to how it had arisen. Six horses had been sold for £9 7s Gd, and advertising charges were complained of. It was resolved that the account stand over for particulars to be furnished. It was resolved that the Mayor and Cr. Gillett be a committee to look into the advertising business. It was rosolved that a borough seal be procured similar to the one used by the late town board. It was resolved that the Mayor and Cr. Gillett sign cheques, and that they be authorised to sign a cheque in favour of the Town Board for the amount of the overdraft. It was resolved in future to hold council meetings oh the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays in each month until the work was well in hand. Mr J. P. Thomson was appointed valuer at the same remuneration as formally, \iz., £10 10s. The question of by-laws was postponed until next meeting. It was resolved that the Mayor, Crs. Hally and Gillett be a committee for the purpose of arranging for an extra room at the back of the council chambers for the use of the M.iyor, and to call for tenders for the same, hiich tenders to b« receivable at the next meeting of the council. The following accounts were passed :—: — \V. Bartlett, £0; T. Ryan, £4 11s ; G. W. Collins, £3 10.s Gd ; G. W. Russell, £2 K>l fid ; W. Souter, 14s; J. S. Bond, 11s Gd ; Buckland, £1 2s Gd. T. Ryans account for £i) 14s was passed, but was not to bo paid until Cr*. Hewitt and Hughes certified to the work being satisfactory. The Mayor drew attention to the finance department, and pointed out that they were now paying £1(17 11s interest on the Kirapiro bridge and orerdraft. They could borrow £3000 at .*> per cent., and that would only com© to £165, and leme sufficient to make the whole of the streets in the township. —Cr. Howitt strongly oppoaed this measure.--It was eventually resolved to hold a social meeting on Monday next to go thoroughly into the matter. This was all the business.
