WELLINGTON, Saturday. The Wellington agents of Sir George Grey recently offered the Kawau Island for sale to tne Go\ ernmcnt, but the latter replied that they had no funds at their disposal for the purchase. It has been ascertained by means of cablegrams from Australia, that the London coriespondent of the South Australian Registor writes that the Bank of England has refused to further subscribe inscribed New Zealand loans. He also stated that the Agent-Geneial had been notified accordingly. Sir Julius Vogel was informed of the receipt of this cablegram, and immediately communicated with Sir F. D. Bell. The latter wires that there is no foundation whatever tor the statement. The Governor distributed the prizes at the Wellington College this afternoon. In the course of his remarks His Excellency said it was incumbent on parents and the guardians of youths to show by example and direct teaching the moral ami religious truths which were not t;uieht in the public schools. jMj'ss Jer\ois presented prizes won recently at the college sports. Mrs P. Jones, who was found dead in a creeK at Pahutinui on Thursday, was the first white woman to land in Wellington. She was GO years of age, and was subject to epileptic fits. The \olunteer officers in the Wellington district will entertain Major-General Whitmore at a banquet on Wednesday evening in honour of his promotion. At the volunteer inspection to-day, it was intended to present the New Zealand Cross to Colonel McDonnell, but owing to the indisposition of that officer the ceremony had to be postponed.

NAPIER, Saturday. Rueward was found guilty of arson, and sentenced to five years' imprisonment. This completes the criminal business, and the Chief Justice proceeds to Gisborne to day.

NEW PLYMOUTH, Saturday. A servant girl employed by Mr Dempsey, headmaster of the Central School, was charged this morning with forging a cheque on the Bank of New Zealand in hpr master's name for £1. The cheque has been in circulation some time. She was committed for trial.

CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. The dry weather bioke up this evening.
