ALEXANDRA NEWS. Paterangi Cheese Factory.
[FROM OUK OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] Duiuno the last week I paid a visit to the Paterangi Cheese Factory, which is now in full swing. My visit was an early one, between the hours of 7 and 8 a.m., and I found the manager, Mr Mead, was far too busy to have time at his disposal to answer any of my enquiries. There were no leas than twelve waggons and drays drawn up in line in front of the factory at one time, delivering their quantities of milk to the manager, which was at once weighed and run off to the vat, and a receipt given of the quantity, each load only taking a minute or two. Through the courtesy of one of the directors and suppliers, Mr George Finch, I was taken through the factory, which was in a most creditable state of cleanliness. The milk supply now exceeds 700 gallons daily, which is expected to be largely increased within this next week or so. Thu cheese manufactured here as already made a name for itself and the directors anticipate a ready and remunerative sale for all they can make. A half ton of this season's cheese was sent away last week to order at a satisfactory price to the directorate. There is already a large stock in hand, which in a very short time will be sufficiently matured to place on the market. From conversations I held with the suppliers, I find the factory has been of great benefit to the district, and all spoke most confidently of having a satisfactory balance at the end of the season. The management nay 3$ per gallon of 101 bs for the milk, and the ao»t of manufacture is one penny per lb of chepse. So far I believe this company ha> been about the most successful in the Waik.ito. Their loss on last season's operations only being some £5 and that at a much smaller supply of milk to what they are now getting, as it costs but little more to manipulate the full quantity of milk the capacity of tho machinery can make into cheese, they fully anticipate a substantial profit will be available by way of dividend. The expenses of the factory aie small, as the manager has only one man to assist him. About 100 pigs are in the yards adjoining, all in excellent condition, their food wholly consisting of the whey from the factory.
The Boxing-Day SportsJupiter Pluvius being favourable, a pleasant day's amusement may safely be anticipated here on Boxing-Day, The stewards are on their mettle to carry out the programme satisfactorily. The natives will, as usual, roll up in considerable numbers, as well as all the settlers in the district, and all the horses may be relied upon as going for the money, small as are the stakes. The concert, farce, and inevitable dance will be attended by all the talent and beauty (for which we are famed) in the dUtiict.
Native News. There is little native news, but I notice that from henceforth their Sabbath (every tenth day) is to be more strictly observed, as the Whatiwhatihoe committee have notices posted up, " That anyone found at any work whatever or harnessing up a horse, etc., will be fined in the sum of 5s for each offence."
Tawbiao's Generosity. A short ti»ne ago Tawhiao lost ljis purge in Alexandra containing some £7 odd. It was pioked up.'fortunately for His Majesty, by a little girl, a daughter of Mr Asnmss, who returned it to the owner. Tawhiao expressed his gratification at receiving it, which would he thought have been somewhat improbable had one.if his own people found it, and substantially rewarded the finder by giving her a pound note. j
Moral TpßPUL'i)u.— Hlame attaches to a jury of intelligent men when they condemn a man for crime whose moral natuie has been penertcd by indjgcstion, diseased liver and kidneys.
