The Native Minister to-day declined to accede to the request that Te Whiti should be released from gaol for a couple of hours to-day, in order that ho might attend the funeral of Isaiah Poruhu, a well-known chief to whom he was related. The Government have appointed the h«n. J. .Shepherd M.L.C., and Mr Montgomery M. H.R., as Commissioners to enquire into the condition of secondary education in North Otago. The Aoiangi's voyage just completed is not the quickest as is generally supposed, although her record is best. Her voyage in July last is still the fastest on record by one hour and fifteen minutes. The outward voyages of the New Zealand Shipping Co.'s steamers for the past .six months are given below, and will be interesting if only a.s showing how close has been the running of the Aorangi, Rimutaka, Tongariro and Kaikoura:— July, Aorangi, 3D days 3hr>. 27mins. ; August, Rimutaka, 39 days shr.s. 12mins. ; September, Ruapehu, 41 days Shis. r>2min*. ; October, Kaikoura, 3!) days 7hrs. 45mins. ; November, Tongariro, 30 d.iys . r )hi s. 52inins. ; December, Aorangi, 30 days 4hrs. 42inin*. Exercising hi« powers under the Native Land Court Act, the Native Minister will shoitly appoint Judges of Land Courts to certain districts, and it ia intended where practicable to make the resident magistrates assist the judges by appointing them as Native Land Court Recorders. Hitherto judges have sat in any district wheie business was waiting, and it is expected the new system will work more satisfactorily, and be less expensive than the old arrangement.
