AN AUTUMN REVERIE.
Pale yellow sunbeams flashing on A rim of sandy lee, And listless winds skip far away, Across the murmuring sea. And fluttering dovyn the falling leaves Like flakes of painted snow, Whilst dreamy woods are all a-gleam With summer's after-glow. And deeper hues come with each change, 0 swoet-voiced, autumn days, Your pallid cheek you seek to hide Behind a golden haze. Lo ! in the quiet shadow?, The dead loaves fill the skie<? ; Silently floating, drifting down Like gilded butterflies. Grim sentinels, outlined 'gainst the sky, Seem the branches brown and bare, With naught to show that ever Bright sunlight rested there. Soon, too soon, fair autumn, Will your sweet life be run, For old year bows his head in sorrow When September days are done. Yes, quickly dies, and we forget That but twelve months ago The glorious world was painted bright With Autumn's golden glow. We fade — fade as the old year fades — The curtain of forgetf ulness is drawn ; The world moves on, the past is dead, Forgotten as soon as gone.
