SOME PECULIARITIES OF THE NOVELISTS.
It is often curious and interesting to note the nru'thud-N of cun.p.isitiufi of celebrated authors. Take a fet\ of the no\ehsts for example, and observe when, where and how they have written: Ihere'a Lord Lytton, he wote 'Night and Morning,' while, J. S. Lafanu preferred to write ' All in the da;k." As if costumes could effect the imagination, William Black wrote ' In Silk Attire,' and Ouida patriotically wrote 'In a Winter Cit>' ' Untier two flags,' one not sufficing, while Annie Thomas w rote *On Guard. 1 Jules Verne chose to write ' Five Weeks in a Balloon,' Thomas Hardy ' Under the Greenwood Tree,' Besant and Rice 'By Celia's Arbor,' and B L. Farjeon 4 By the Sign of the Silver Flagon,' wh'le \V. 11. Baker wrote 'Inside' R. E. Francillon wrote *By Day and Niuht,' and Beitha M. Clay ' Fwixt Smile and Tear.' (r. A. Sala wrote ' Quite Alone. Mr 3 Henry Wood wrote 'Within the Maze," Kate S. Macquoid ' Beside the River,' Frederick Talbot ' Through Fire and Water/ F. W. Hacklander ' Behind the Counter," and Miss M. E. Braddoa 'To the Bitter End.' Mrs. Oliphant wrote ' For Love and Life/ but Chailes Gibbon. 'In Honour Bound," though afterwards 4 For LacK of Gold' 'In Pastures Green.' James Payn has confessed to having; written 'By Proxy.' Even Miss Mulloch. wrote 4 Nothing New,' and W..E. Norris • No New Thing," while Charles Reade is believed to have wiitten 'White Lies.' Rhoda Broughton wrote l Not Wisely but Too Well,' and Mrs Macquoid ' Too Soon.' Meta Orred wrote 'A Long lime ago/ G. P. R. James ' Thirty \ears Sinee 1 and Alexander Dumas 4 Twenty Years After.' Dr. Samuel Warren was most prolific, writing ' Ten Thousand a Year ;" Victor Hugo wrote ' Ninety -Three,' but it ia well known that Charles Lever wrote ' One of Them.'
