PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL.
Tiik Pinko County Council held an ordinal y and also the annual meeting at the council office?,, Cambridge, yesteiday. Present: Messis J. C. Firth, W. T. Kiith, Brmiskill, Murphy, (Jould, Smith, and Chepuiell. Fn the absence of the chairman Mi. J. C. Firth presided. CnuHK-iL'ONDKN'CK. —The following correspondence was teceived : — From Mr W. M. Hay, giving his opinion that the Piako County iiit? exempt fiom any liability to cimtiibutt: to the Thames District Hospital after the 17th of last August ; from Mr Peicy Sir.itli, Auckland, re roads at Te Aioha; from the manager of the Succe-s mine, Waioiongomai, stating th.it he had laid the extension of the tram line, and was .sending quart/ over it ; fioni the Public Works Department re biidgcs <>n the Cambridge-Tain anga. Brunskill, and seconded by Cr. Smith, that Mi Sandes be instructed to prepare the information for forwarding to the (Jovernment as req nhed. — Cmied. — From Mr T. Lawless, Te Aioha, asking to be allowed an auctioneer's licen.se at a icduction of £•">, moie than half the year hawng expiied. — Pioposed by Cr. Could and seconded by Ci. Chepmell, that the license be issued on payment «»f the amount ti\ed by the Act, \\a. £10. —Carried. —A considei.ible quantity of coiiespondonce was tead fiom Messis Kobt. Mackie, Michael, and W. M. Hay, re Claik's diain, at Te Aroha. \li Mackie was in attendance, and desiied to make an explanation. Cr. (Jould proposed that the question of Claik's drain be not re-opened seconded by Cr. Chepmell. Cr. Murphy moved an amendment that Mr Maukie be heard. The Chairman seconded, pro forma. The amendment was earned. Mr Mackie then made a statement, and it was proposed by Cr. Murphy that the costs lecoveied in the case, Council v. Mackie, be remitted. This not being seconded, the motion lapsed. Cr. Murphy suggested that a sufficient sum should be borrowed under the (loverninenl Loans to Local Bodies Act of IS)S(i, to piopeily foim the load from Te Aroha railway station to Waiieie steam. After a \ci y long discussion of a conversational chniattei, Cr. Miuphy proposed and Cr. Smith seconded " That application be made by telegram foi a loan of JL'l5OO foi making and c >mpleting the road from the northern boundary to the southern boundary of Te Aioha riding, the said road being the main Te Arohn-Shaftesbury and (J onion Settlement road, including a portion of Budge->ti<;ot, Te Aroha township, and the cioss load fiom Murphy's landing on the mer at the foot of the mountain through Mr Wilson.-, land and the W.iiorongomai township to Kilgour stieet, the pioposcd money to be bouowe.d under .vud in teims of the, (io\ eminent Loans to Local Bodies Act, ISS,;, and to bo solely for cv pcndituio within, and the secunty for iel>.iyment thoieof to be upon a sj)ecial rate to be levied within the said tiding." Gained. It was proposed by Cr. Murphy and seconded by Ci. Smith, seconded by Cr Muiphy, the clerk's salary was iucieased to tl")0 per annum from the Ist of next month. The following tenders were accepted for forming the Tui prospecting tiack, each section being 30 chains : — No. 1, T. Donovan, till 10s ; No. 1, P. Dillon, JLIU 5s ; No. H, T. Donovan, t'l'J. Soon after noon the council adjourned theießultii ineetm<r for about ten muiutcs, to enable them to hold the annual one. Tn consequence of the absence of the chairman {Mr W. C. L Williams) Mr J. C. Firth wii" voted to the chair. The Clerk read a letter from Mr Williams, apologising for hi» absence. It was proposed by Cr. Murphy and seconded by Cr. Brunskill th.it Mr Williams bo le-appointed chairman for the ensuing yeai, and carried unanimously. The council resumed the oidinary meeting at l'!.3op.iu. The clerk was instructed to write and inform the Uovernor that the two members ontheHospit.il and Chantable Aid Board allotted to Piako county had not been elected, in consequence of there not being a quotum at the meeting on the date set apait for it to bo held, and suggesting that Crs.
