TE AROHA.

[from our own correspondent.] Te Ahoha, Monday. At the sitting of the R.M. Court on Friday, Mr Stratford presiding, the following cases were heard :-- Alfred Comes, Augustus Corner, and E. Devey, junr., were charged by the police with furious riding in \Vlntaker-&treet, and were fined 10> c \ch. — Civil case* : Piako County Council v. J. R. Gouldie, claim for rates 7s. Judgment for amount, with costs Bs.— F. A. Pa\ itt (for Piako County Council) v. Robt. Pavitt. The defendant in this case v.is sued for obstructing a drain in WhiUktr street, Te Aroha. The matter had on diffeient occasions during the last eighteen months been bnui^iit under the notice of the council, and the engineer for the riding had been instructed to ha\e the drain ileired, but each tune tin-. was done defendant persisted in filling it up again, hence the pro-ont action. The defence .set up was that Mr Purchas, formerly county engineer, had given defendant permission to fill up the drain. An adjournment was asked for by the defendant in order to enable him to procure the evidence of Mr Purchas, but the application was refu-ed as the Bench could not see that the defendant would be benefited thereby. If he had sustained injury by the action of the council in ordering the drain to be filled up his proper course would have been to sue that body, but instead of doing so he had taken an illegal course. A tine of 10s was inflicted, with £~i 11s costs. Mr Dyer, instructed by yiv W. M. Hay, appealed for the county council.— C. Thaxter v. W. Moon. Claim £13 HU *Gd, balance of account for work done. Judgment for £3 0s lid, with costs.. At the special meeting of the Domain Board on Saturday, the advisability of having .stated hours for the admission of ladies t'> Nos. 2 and G baths was considered, and it was i e^ohed to adopt the following irrangement : That X<». G be set apart for l.idie* only, from \) to 11 a.m., and No. 2, tivim 11 a.m. to 1 p in. No. l>, from Gto 7 p.m. and Xn. 2 from 7 to 8 p.m. The Chairman asked that the motion of which lie had given notice respecting the revision of chaiges for admission might be allowed to stand over until there was a full meeting of the boa id, as it affected an existing byelaw. The question re the sale of bath tickets was also postponed for consideration at a full meeting, the only members being Meters Wilson (chairman), Ahier, and «Juinn. It was resolved that a latter be sent to the Minister of Lands drawing his attention to certain requests submitted by the board to the Colonial Secretary and to the Minister of Justice, viz., the appointment of a medical practitioner in connection with the baths, and the erection of a building for n library within the domain. A letter signed by twenty-five visitors was lead, asking that one of the baths might be set apart for children, and it was decided that No, 5 bath be reserved for them, from S a.m. to 5 p.m. Arrangements were made foi having the drinking fountain nn mediately lepaired, and the meeting then closed. Since the arrival of the hon the Minister ot Justice he has leceived three deputation.-.. On the first occasion he was waited upon by some of tho residents respecting the need for Government to subsidise a qualified and experienced medical man in connection with the baths. The great necessity for having some one able to advise invalids with regard to the most suitable springs and how they should be used was forcibly explained. Some conservation took place as to whether any sum would be granted by the residents, and the Minister was assured that they such vv o'lld be done to a reasonable amount. Mr Tole in reply said the matter was of much importance and was one in which it was the duty of Government to assist. Personally he was strongly in favour of granting the required aid but the question was one of ways and means, and there were so many claims upon Govern meiit that it was difficult to satisfy them all. He did not know whether any of the money voted for thermal springs was still available, but he would communicate with his colleague, the Minister of Linds, and assured the deputation that he wonld do what lay in his power to meet the wishes of the inhabitants. Several members of the library committee next waited upon tho Minister to solicit Ins aid in p.ocniring a •imall building, which had fallen into the hands of the Government, and which the committee were desirous of acqniiintr for library purposes. Mr Tole promised ins assistance, and would uiie inrnrdiately to the Hon. Ministet tor Public W-nks with leference to the matter. He approved of the idea of having the library situated near the baths and thought an excellent sito could be could be obtained iv the domain. The thud deputation was from the Domain Board, but the matters touched upon were mainly those which hod been previously laid before the hon. the Colonial Secretary", A good deal of interest is being taken in the forthcoming raoes, for which there are a considerable number of entries. For the Hurdles, ten horses are entered ; for the J.C. Handicap, bi\; and for the Anniversary Stakes, nine. For the other event* theie is also likely to be a good muster at the ataiting post. If the weather be favourable a good day's sport may be looked for on Friday next.
