MAT AM ATA.

Tfe cases which Mr J. C. Firth is bringing against certain natives for posse^imi of portions of the Matamuta south block will, we understand, be vigorously prosecuted at once. Mr Firth, accompanied by Messrs Button and Hay, counsel in the cases, proceeded to Matamata »n Friday last. It was not their intention to further treat with the natives for posseseton, but merely to collect evidenco and consalt as to future proceedings. Ample time has been given the natives to come to a just and amicable settlement, but thoy have shown no dispoMtion to avail themselves of their opportunities. We are pleased that Mr Fnth has made the natives fair otters and allowed them more than sufficient time to consider them, because now there will bo no ground even for the most extreme philo-M.iori to attribute harshness to him, or to raise a feeling of false sympathy. We believe that not only will no further offers of settlement be made, but all former ones are now definitely withdrawn. As to the cases of forcible entry and forcible detainer, it is said they will not be proceeded with unless in the case of further aggression by the natives. Messrs Button and Hay have returned, but Mr Filth still re mains at Matamata, in connection with matters relating to the estate.
