HOW A CORK LEG SAVED A MAN'S LIFE.
A BktTrMf soldier tells a story of tho Fiji settlements in tho eaily days. A white man "who wan taken piisoner by an inland tribe had a cork log. Noticing that his c.iptora were fixing up an oven, ho become nervous, and to conceal his fear ho called for something to oat. Food being given he used a large jacknife to cut it up. Every mouthful or two he stuck the jacknife into hia log with such force that it stood erect. Tho natives looked on in groat astonishment and with evident alarm. After the meal was over ho began to unscrew his leg. That was too much for the poor savages. They hadn b the slightest curiosity to see what lie could do noxt, but opened a passage ior him and let him pass unmolested. When ho reached his horse the natives began to gather around, but after mounting ho mado a motion to unscrew his head, and the spectators fled in dismay.
