SUMMER.
The heaven is like a brazen shield, Earth is a parched and arid field, And out of heaven the sun Strikes at the Earth, and none Can bear his fire, or shun. Intolerable stillness fills The weary plain, the weary hills ; The streams are stricken dumb But from uiid air doth come The gnats' continuous hum. The adder and the lizard lie Beneath the red sun's lidless eye. A dreamy and drowsy South Breathes from a languid mouth Satiety and drouth. —F. W. Home, '* Songs of a Wayfarer.
