DEATH AT THE ALTAR.
A melancholy accident happened in the parish chapel of Kildare on the 7th October. The Rev. Dr. Ka\anagh, P.P.. was officia ting at early mass, and having concluded, his hand was on the chalice, to raise it from the altar, when the marble figure of a cheiub, weighing about three stone, which ornamented the front angle of the altar, was seen to topple forwards and fall some 10 feet. There was no time for a warning cry. The statue crashed down on the priest's head. He seemed to replace the chalice on the altar, turned partly round, and fell backwards heavily, striking hishead against tne steps. Some members of the congregation went to assist him, and he was removed to the sacristy, but life wa» then extinct. The altar at which Dr. Kavanagh was standing when he was killed is a new marble altar, which was consecrated on October 11th of last year.
