RAGLAN.
At a meeting of the Karioi Highway Board held on Saturday last, the erection of a wharf to deep water at Raglan occupied the attention of the board. It was, after consideration, proposed by Mr J. H. Phillips, who in an able speech spoke of the advantages to tho district from the erection of the said wharf, seconded by Mr Billington (chairman), and carried, "That this board co-operate with tho town of Raglan and Whaingaroa Highway Boards for the purpose of raising money to build a wharf to deep water at Raglan." And it was proposed "That the three chairmen of boards meet at Raglan on the following Wednesday to take action." A meeting of the Town of Raglan Highway Board was held the same evening (Saturday, the, 13th inst.), and they also passed a resolution to co-operate with other
local boards. It was proposed by Mr Wilson, seconded by Mr Wylie and carried, "That £100 be applied for from the Government for the erection of a wharf to deep water, for the benefit of the whole district." It was also resolved to bring into force "The Local Bodies Loan Act." The days of meeting were changed from Tuesday to Saturday, the, first Saturday in each month being the day appointed. On Wednesday, the 17th, the chairmen of the four Highway Boards in the county met to elect a representative for the new District Hospital Board. Mr Bulford presided. There were present : Messrs Parker (Pirongia), Sutton (Whaingaroa), J. H. Phillips (Raglan), and Billington (Karioi). Mr William Johnstone, of Ruapuke, being the only candidate for the office proposed, he was elected unanimously. All the chairmen expressed on behalf of their several districts a desire that the building required should be erected in Hamilton, that being considered the most suitable place. Expression was also given that it was desirable that all undue expense should be kept down, and that the building be of a simple and inexpensive character, a cottage being only required etc., for present wants. The chairmen of the three local boards afterwards met to consider the erection of a wharf, as the Whaingaroa Boad have not yet taken action. The meeting was adjourned until next Wednesday. On Saturday next a special meeting of the Whaingaroa Board will take place to pass a resolution to co-operate with the other boards for the erection of the said wharf, should it be considered by the board to be right to do so. Now that the subject has been taken up by the local bodies and a desire shown to help themselves, it is to be hoped that the Government will accede to their request, for without doubt nothing will contribute more to the success of the district than the erection of a wharf, and alsoe the making of a good road to Hamilton, by the placing of metal upon the one already formed. Isolation is what we suffer from, and until this is removed how can the district progress once this is removed there is little fear but that we can succeed to draw settlers here.— (Own Correspondent Raglan, November 18th, 1886.
