A BIG CHURN.
One of the largest churns rnanufaott rxl in the colony has been turned out in Christchuroh by Messrs Andrews and Beaven. It is on the principle recently patented by Mr W. A. Turner, farmer, of New Brighton, who appears to have suc-r"> ue-Hfully combined the advantages of the English barrel churn with those of the American heater churn. When the cream is fiist put into the churn it is operated upon as if it were in an ordinary barrel churn with fixed beaters; but if the cream becomes steeply the beaters can be revolved independently .of the barrel, and the cream agitated sufficiently to turn it quickly into butter, thus avoiding the defect in the ordinary barrel churn in which there is no means of agitating the cream when it geta into that patience-trying state known as sleepy. When the butter commences to come the churn can again be alteied into the ordinary barrel churn with fixed beaters, and the great strain which is thrown on the beaters of the American beater churn when the butter is coming is avoided. The different alterations of combinations can be made whilst the churn is in motion by simply moving a handle. There are no ledges iv this churn for the cream to adhere to, and the inside can be cleaned out easier and more expeditiously than in the ordinary barrel churn. The churn is very simple and as easily taken apart as the beater churn. These churns are found to make butter in about half thp time of the ordinary barrel churn, __a»a the butter is found to be granulated, the one thing wished for by all good butter makers. The churn under notice is fitted to be worked by a turbine water-wheel in connection with a cream separator on the estate of Mr John Grijjg at Longbeach.
