THE MEAT TRADE AND THE RAILWAY.

His Worship, tho Mayor of Hamilton, has kindly handed us the following letter for publication : — (Te Aroha Station.) Working Railways Department, November Ist, lftW. Sir,— With reference to the enquiries about the truck-load of dead me.it which ymi nude nt our recent interview, 1 have the honour to inform you that with meat properly hung in the trucks for long journeys, the load in practice does not exceed two-and-a-hnlf (2k) tons, and in a great many instances it does not reach two (2) tons. We should not ipekon on carrying more than two-and-a-half tons from Hamilton. After your meeting with Mr Hudson lie made enquries from Mr Banks in accoidance with your wishos, and the latter gentleman expressed his opinion that the rate for conveyance offered by tho Minister, equal to about one-eighth of a penny (i,) per lb, would allow of the business being cirried on successfully. The bugg^stion you have since made that a further concession might bo c msidered, will bs duly submitted to the Hon. tho Minister for Public Works at an early date. In the meantime, as the concession offered is sufficient for tiade purposes, it would be as well to make use of it in such calculations as you may be making in connection with the proposed dead meat tiade.— l am, Sir, your obedient servant, J. P. Maxwell, General Manager, N. Z. Railways W. A. Graham, Esq, Hamilton.
