WELLINGTON, Thursday. Tjil I'OinmidSion of Captain F. S. Mayhew, of Spring Creek (Mirlhoiough) Rifles, has been cancelled, he having been onvicted of embezzlmg the funds of the corps. The funeral of the late Puke Te Ao, who foimeily represented the Western Maori Didtiiu 1 " in Pat hauicnt, took place afc Otaki this afternoon. The Hon. Native Minister, accoinpinied by the Under- Sacietary of the Native Department, left for Otaki this morning, to take pirt in the sad ceremony. Mr Ballance was warmly welcomed by the leading men of a liige number of natives assemble.l. The. l>nri.il seivice was conducted in the Maori language by the Rev. Mr McWill'ams, Church of England missionary. About 2000 natives were present.
DUXEDIN, Thuisday. About 300 pu -ons attended a public meeting this evening, ;it which resolutions weif pr\-,3t\l promising support to tlic policy of assisting colonial industries by the imposition, of increased customs duties.
