The last two being the lowest, lots were dnwn and the contiact fell to Shine, whose to der w.i? accepted. For deepening drain at Tj Aroha Weht the following tenders were received.— W. MaidenH, £3Gl3s; H. Caudwell, £30; Jas. Shine, £30 ; Collins and Voysey, £2') (accepted). It was decided to call tenders for one mile of road at Te Aroha. West, and

also for road woiks at Richmond. Tno rest of the business was of a formal nature. On Saturday afternoon another well contested foot r.too came off at the raca courdo between M. Cornea and T, Tierney for £5 a side, distance the same as in the previous match, viz. quarter of a mile. The eonpetitors were bofch in good form, and each was confident of success. In this race as in their former one the running waB exceedingly close. Tierney held a slight lead until about ton yards from home, when ho slipped aud fell, Comes thus securing the st.ikes. A half mile race was also run between J. Faulkner and G. Wiggins for £2 aside, tho result being ft comparatively easy win for Faulkner. The right to erect a public booth at the regatta on the 9th inst., was disposed of at auction on Saturday, by Mr J. F. Cocks. It was knocked down to Mr A. Thomson for £5 10. Messrs Maxwell, Hudson, and Cooiri arrived here by train on Saturday, on business connected with the tail way department. They leave again by rail to-day. Wednesday. There was only one small debt case heard at tho sitting of the 11. M. Court yesterday, vi/., (i. M. Burke v. H. Hyde, in which plaintiff got judgment for the amount claimed, £1 4s Id, with costs, (h. The ca^e Piako County Council v. J. (Jouldie, cl.-tim for rates, was adjourned till next sitting of the court, which will taku place at 4 p.m. on Friday, the 19th inst. After December Ist., foitnightly sittings of the court will be held on Tuesdays, in the second and fourth weeks in each month. The usual monthly meeting of the District School Committee took place lasf night when the following members were present :— Messrs Vause, (chairman), Ilott, La very .anil Dobson. Mr J. L. Chalmers sent in his resignation as a member of committee, owing to his other duties having called him away from the district. His resignation was accepted, and Mr R. Mackie was elected in his stead. The report of the heat' teacher showed the number of pupils on the roll to be 134, and the average attendance 105. It was announped that the annual examination of pupils by the inspector (Mr Fidler) would take place on the 17th inst. At the previous meeting of the committee it had been decided that, as the breaking up of the school would interfere with the preparation of tho pupils for the examination, it would be advisable to postpone tho usual Michaelmas holidays until after the inspector's visit. The date hud for his coming is, howe\er, three weeks later than expected, and it was resolved last night to continue school work until the breaking up for the Christmas holiday, to which the week that the children have now been deprived of will be added. The summer holidays will therefore commence on the 17th instead of the 24th of December, A resolution was passed that legal action be at once taken by the clerk to the committee against parents who having been notified in compliance with the Act to send their children to t school had failed to do so ; and that notices be immediately issued to the parents of other irregular attendants. Me->>rs Ahier and Lavery were appointed a \ isiting committee for the ensuing month, and the pasning of a few small accounts concluded the business. •Professor Martin Swallow and a concert company from Auckland were to have appeared in the Public Hall Liht night, but owing to the performance having been insufficiently advertisod it was doomed advisable to postpone it till this evening.
