RAGLAN.

Up to the last few days search parties have been out in boats looking for the remains of Mr Robertson, but without avail. Mr Bulford and others have on sevcial occasions proceeded dowa the coast on the .station .side, ns> the cm rent fiom the harbour sets northorly in that direction, but nothing could be .seen of the body, and it now seems veiy unceit.im if it will ever be recoveied. The s id accident ha* been liiiich Mt here, the late .Mr Robertson being an old settler and much respected. He leaves a wife and a numerous family to mourn his los"*. He had a sum of money on him at the time of the accident, consisting of a cheque for £'10. He came to Raglan about 1866 irom the West Coast diggings, and on Ins arrival here purchased the property of Pukututoe, consisting of 3,409 acres, from the natives. He was in Auckland during the week previous to his death, and had returned to his home in great hope of disposing of his estate under the Village Settlement Scheme, it being land adjoining Government property suitable for that purpose. A \e;y l.ut;e quantity of rain fell during la.st \vt>ek, along with a great deal of electric distill banco. On Monday night a heavy thunderstorm passed ov or the disti ict. The lightning was veiy wvid, and between s>cvon and eight on that evening a hea\y 'thunderbolt fell just over the bar. The effect was awfully grand and for several idayh after the air .seemed charged with the , eh'ctnc fluid. Fine warm weather will bo of groat be-ie'it now, as the giound is cold laid Sodden with v> much id.\n. All ciops aie flow mostly in. Pot itoi>-> will bo a veiy back waul (.up ; in fact all kinds of vegetation aie veiy btcku aid this soa^ou heie. Tno orchaids of the various settlers are looking beautiful. That belonging to Mr Bulfoid, of R.iglan, is looking very promising for a good ciop of apple?, plums and other fiuit. Mr Wallis's orchard too is showing by the bloom upon the trees that a good crop can bo expected. One peur tree iiii sight to behold. Indeed, with proper care it ib proved that our distuct in the fiuit-giowing line can produce large quantities. On the property of Mr J. K. M'Donald, just opposite his house, is a lemon tree crowded with fiuit, aNo an oiange tree in bearing, with oranges of rich flavour growing thereon. On the slopes of Karioi the natives have for long giown lemons with gi cat success, so that we cm see that ouliiury and s-ub tropical fruit can be grown here with success. Our local tiaricr the s.s. Staffa, which runs hmc eveiy foituight came in last .Friday moiring fr.un Onehunga, bringing htteen new and a full cargo of n\i\ and pigs weic taken on boaid. She returned to Onehunga \ia Kawhia. The bar was very rou^h on her passage out. Capt. McMillan of the slnpC.uiteibuiycame heie v\ itli her on a \ i^it to a fnend. The want of a wharf to deep water was again fell the ote.\m a r bung detained several hours. The ■iggit.'.tio'i for a new vvhaif >till continues. Mr C. Sutton his bc°n eloct c d a member of the Raglan Town Boaid, vice Mr Pegler, resigned. The boaid meet to elect a cliairmin on Tnesdaj r , and other business. — (Own Cm respondent.) — Raglan, October 30th, 188(5).
