SPORTING. The V.R C Meeting. THE FAVOURITE WINS THE DERBY.
[special cablegram.] Melbourne, Octobci 30. The first day's racing under the auspice* of the Victoria Racing Club took place to-day at Fleinington. A strong wind was blowing, and the dust was exceedingly annoying. It is estimated that about 35,000 weie present. His Excellency the Governor and' suite were among those present. Included among visitors were Lord and Lady Carnngton, from New South Wales, and the Governors of South Australia and Tasmania. The road was very largely patumised. The course was in splendid order. The Derby was; of course, the race which excited the most infeiest, and Trident's victory was recened with great enthusiasm. Hales, who l-ode him, received quite an o\at:on, and on returning to the p.\ridock to weigh in, was loudly cheered. The win has been a popular ono among the public, and the bookmakers have lost rather heavily ; and should this speedy son of Robinson Oiusoe win the Cup on Tuesday, it is expected that fully one half of the bookmakers will bo broken. Trident is supported to win the Cup at 100 to 30. Immediately afteY tho race, the winning hor->e w.is dictated with the blue ribbon, and Chesham, the second horse, and Volcano (Trident's stable companion) received similar compliments. Volcano, who made the running in the interests of Trident, was severely punished, , and much cut about, his jockey had his breeches torn and had a narrow escape of being hurt on the rails, near the home turn. The race was very fast throughout, and the time registered was equal to that of Martini- Henry's in 1883, which up to the present was the fastest on record for the event. - The following are the details of the racing :—: — Melbourne Stakes of ssovs each. 1 ft, with 300 added ; second, 50,ov\s. The '-tart was delayed owing to the fracHousness of First Consul and Che-ba:n, but eventually! Mr Watson despatched the field on \eryv even terms, with the exception of First* Consul, who was left at the post. Cbes-^ ham's colours were, however, most prou:i-> nent when the flic? fell, but he soon conceded the position to Volcano, Kingfish being third, and Tiiaent fouith. Passingthe stand, Volcano was leading the field at a terrific pace, and was throe lengths ahead of Chesh un, who in turn waslexding Kingfish, Maddelina, and Trident by a couple of lengths. At thebiidgo. Volcano still I) id a load of two lengths, Clvvsham and Tiident being next, and racing neck and neck. Sweeping into the straight Chesham had a four lengths le id from Trident, and at the distance post was still in front, Here Hales called upon the favourite, and rapidly closed on Chesham, when a most desperate stuiggle ensued ; but when a hundnd yards from home, Tiident was on even terms with Mr Cooper's colt, and he finished with remarkable gameness a length ahead of Chesham; Aglaos, twenty lengths away, third; First Consul, fouith; Kinghsh, fifth ; Maddelina, sixth ; Volcano, last, Time, 2mins. 39-secs.
