A MIDSUMMER IDYL.
Thk bright" sun shone, and summer's wealth of flowers Crazed upward to the*~cau<er of their birth With glftd?ome eyes to thank him for the warmth Which diew them from the cold embrace of earth. Tno feathered tribe, the cares of nesting o'er, Were teaching' their young fledgling broods to sing, And for a time the cruel bird of piey Listen'd entranced, with calmly folded vring. While down below the happy river smiled In dimpled eddies, as the sun's bright rays , Glinted mid ripples, or with rainbow hues Decked the bright splendour of her dashing sprays. The troutlets rose, in spottive glee, to catch The butterflies, who with uncertain flight Hovered above— their fair reflection saw And dwelt a moment o'er the novel sight. Joyous Summer ! regretfully we part With you and all the bright, fair things you brought ; ) But seasons change, and Winters chill mu^t come, And all our vain regrets count less than naught.
