OHINEMURI COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of this body took place on Saturday last, O. Cock (chairman) presiding. Considerable correspondence was read bearing on the settlement of the assets and liabilities as between the Thames and Ohinemuri Counties, to and from the Treasury, the Auditor-General, and the Thames County Council. The Auditor-General wrote, asking whether the council were prepared for the commission of audit. The enHre matter was left in the hands of a sub-committee. The commisbion will probably sit within a few weeks. A number of applications for aid to prospecting were read. x\. large quantity of correspondence was read re gold (duty on quartz from Ohinemuri smelted at the Thames, from which it appeared that the Thames Borough were wrongly allocated the gold duty instead of the Ohinemuri County. Outstanding rates \v«re ordered to be sued for. A letter was received from L. M. Grace, Esq., M.H. H., enclosing one from the Public Works Department re grant of £'500 for the ThamesTauranga road, which .stated that the Government was seriously considering the advisability of expending the money on the road in lieu of entrusting it to the county. Several of the councillors thought it advisable to let the Government carry out their "threat." It was however resolved to apply for the grant forthwith. The motion for reconstructing the Waihi bridge was held over, [lending- the settlement of the county account. At the close of the ordinary business a motion was brought forward to rescind a resolution granting the chairman an increase of salary of £50, voted when the late clerk tesigned on account of the chairman undertaking the clerical work. This was the signal for a war of words, in which some very serious allegations were freely made, and for some time the Council Chamber was without form and void. When older was evolved from the general chaos, it appeared that instead of being guided by the minutes of the previous meeting, the councillors were relying on the report gnen in the local print, in which the chairman was stated to have committed theft. It was shown, however, that the report was incorrect, and that the accusation arose in the fertile imagination of the local Editor. The resolution was not carried, it being plainly shown that the present system saves the county a large annual sum. When the storm had subs'ded and the air somewhat cleared much misunderstanding became apparent, and the council, which had almost pjoverbially become a house diwded against itself, adjourned with a more united feeling than they have shown since their election.
