HOW CAFFREY WAS CAPTURED.
The Sydney papers contain additional particulars of the arrest of Caffrey. He was, cleverly captured by Constable May on Saturday afternoon, October 2, while crossing the punt from Deep Creek, Fernmount, where he had been employed painting a bridge. M.iy was disguised as a swagsman, and said he wanted to ha\e a chat. The puisoner said he had walked from Sydney, but he could not give a description of the road. He said he had no firearms, but when apprehended the police found a six-chambered bulldog revolver loaded in his swag and 11 cartridges, a gold ring, a lock of hair, a piece of black satin ( apparently used as a piratical black flap), sea boots, a heavy overcoat, and a muffler and socks such as are used in colder climates. He said he might want the revolver at the Queensland diggings. The prisoner said he had never been in New Zealand. No papers whatever were found in his possession. He said he did not know a vessel the Sovereign of the Seas. He said the black flag was given to him by a man to make a sash of. The accused clops not wear earrings, but hi.s ears are pierced, and he otherwise tully answered to tha description. The constable asked for a remand for eight days for further evidence, which was granted. The accused only asked two irrelevant questions. He could not satisfactorily account for his movements since June. He said he worked on the Sydney wharves as a lumper in June last, and on a small vessel, but was not j acquainted with anyone in Sydney. i
