SAD BOATING FATALITY AT LYTT ELTON. [BY TELEGRAPH-PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Christchurch, Monday.
Monday. A itOAT belonging: to the ship Rangitikei capsi/ed in Lyttelton harbour about four o'clock yesterday afternoon, and Captain Edward Budd, of tho Rangitikei, and a seaman named George Hawkins were drowned. The accident happened off Ripa I.sl.uid. The boat, with four men in her, were under sail, and it is supposed the'sails were made fast. A sudden squall capsized her and she sank. The captain and sailmuker suppoited themselves on an oar, but the former became exhausted and let go. The third mate, Watkins, swam until picked up, but Hawkins, A.8., sank soon after the boat upset. Tho men working on Ripa Island hoibted a distress signal on seeing the accident, and the yacht Aioa came up and saved the third officer and the sailmaker. A boat sent out by the Garrison Artillery picked up the captain, but ho wai» dead. Hawkins body has not yet been recovered.
