THE WELCOME NUGGET.
Tjib Victorian Secretary for Mines is try injf to make his quarterly summary of the mining returns as interest ing 1 us a story book, and tho last report mentions an incident whioh, he *ays, •' places the mining industry in a favourable light as compared with farming. A» in well known, tho celebrated 'Welcome' nugget — i-the largest ever found in Victoria — wns discovered by two miners named Rioh.ird Outs and John Dcsoux, at Bnkfrv hill, Ballurat, on June 11, 1858. It weighed 21950z, and was sold for £10,500. Desoux invested his whare of tho proceeds in farming, at which he lost everything he poseesHed, and he is 'bow engaged in consthicting a puddling machine at Moli.igul, with a riew to once more engaging in mining- purauitn." The moral to be drawn from this pathetio anecdote is that picking up a chance nugget is one thing, and knowing where to buy a farm and how to manage it another.
