[by telegraph— press association. I WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Catherine Kelly, charged with the manslaughter of her husband, was this afternoon found guilty, with a strong lecommendatiori to mercy. The Government have offered Mr Cr.iwford £10 per acre for his land taken for defence purposes at Fort Ballance and Point Hatswell. The last brick in the tunnel on the Wellington Manawatu Company's line was placed in position yesterday, and it is expected the line will be open through to Lougburn early in November. The Government have received an offer from a Dnnedin firm to manufacture rails. They have secured a patent which will enable them to use any sort of old
iron for the purpose. (JHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. The directors of the Southern Cross Petroleum Company have received advices that the depth of the bore on Friday last was 1449 feet, with an increase of oil and gas showing. Thomas Hall was taken from Lyttelton to Timaru this morning. One report states that the removal is in connection with the exhumation of Captain Cain'a body : another, that he has gone at his o\\ n request to dispose of certain property before the trial.
NELSON, Tuesday. The Town School Committee last night agreed by a majority of four to three to m'.mt the use of the schoolrooms for religious instruction by a minister of religion between 9 and 930 o'clock. It was, however, agreed that the whole committee should resign in order to give househelders an opportunity to express an opinion.
DUNEDIN", Tuesday. Three young men have reported to the police that while they were at Ocean Beach last night they saw the figures of a man and a woman dive into the waves. They ran to the spot, but could discover nothing.
